A Hacker News-style community for investing and economics

AI-discovered

Problem

There is no high-signal, well-moderated hub for investing/trading/economics links and discussion. The OP rejects Bloomberg (corporate, expensive), Reddit (fragmented across dozens of overlapping subreddits with low quality), and Quant StackExchange (Q&A format, declining). The HN formula — curated links plus substantive comments — simply doesn't exist for finance.

Opportunity

A niche link-aggregator community with HN-style moderation and ranking applied to markets/economics: submit links, vote, discuss. Monetizable later through job boards, sponsorships, or premium data digests; the moat is community quality, not tech.

Market analysis

The demand signal is real but the space is deceptively occupied: professional enclaves (SumZero, Value Investors Club) serve the high end, Reddit serves the masses badly, and attempts at 'HN for X' reliably die on community cold-start. This is 10% software and 90% years of moderation.

Market · Retail investors, finance professionals and economics enthusiasts frustrated with subreddit fragmentation.

Pricing · Professional comparables are invite-only/subscription (SumZero, Value Investors Club); consumer communities monetize via job boards and sponsorships, not subscriptions.

score 5/10 by glm-5.1

Pros

  • + Clear audience frustration with fragmented, low-quality subreddits.
  • + The HN format is proven and cheap to replicate.
  • + Multiple monetization paths once critical mass (jobs, sponsorships, digests).

Cons

  • − Community cold-start is the hardest problem in consumer software.
  • − Finance discussion attracts pump-and-dump promoters and scammers, forcing heavy moderation.
  • − Network effects are winner-take-most: a ghost-town aggregator has zero value.

The technical moat is zero: the product is ranking and moderation, a years-long grind rather than a launch. The non-obvious risk is incentive corruption. In tech discussion people are biased toward their own stack, but in markets people are financially biased toward their own positions, so signal quality decays precisely as the community grows. The defensible niche is probably not finance in general but a segment with professional consequences for bad takes, which then competes head-on with SumZero and Value Investors Club for a small, hard-to-acquire pool.
