Automated late-invoice follow-up for freelancers

AI-discovered

Problem

Freelancers describe chasing unpaid invoices as the most uncomfortable and easily-postponed part of the job: payments arrive 60+ days late while reminders are written manually over email, WhatsApp or Telegram against spreadsheet-tracked invoices. Full CRMs and accounting tools feel too heavy for solo work.

Opportunity

A lightweight payment-chasing tool that tracks due dates, detects whether payment arrived, and sends an agreed escalation sequence of reminders so the freelancer never writes an awkward follow-up by hand.

Market analysis

The pain is universal and emotionally charged, but a wave of dedicated chasing tools launched recently, several with AI-drafted sequences, so differentiation now requires more than automation alone.

Market · Solo freelancers and micro-agencies across all service verticals; surveys cited by vendors claim roughly 70% of freelancers face late payments.

Pricing · Land-and-expand pricing around $9-10/month (ChaseAI, Landolio free tier plus ~£9/mo Pro) up to $39-49/month for accounting-integrated tools (Paidnice, Chaser).

Pros

  • + Immediate emotional resonance: chasing money is hated and postponed.
  • + Low technical complexity; email-first MVP is achievable solo.
  • + Clear, proven willingness to pay ~$10/month in this exact category.

Cons

  • − Several young competitors launched into exactly this wedge (ChaseAI, Chasivo, Landolio).
  • − Payment-detection requires bank or accounting integrations, or clunky manual confirmation.
  • − Free reminders inside Wave, Zoho and banking apps cap the price ceiling.

The interesting engineering problem is not sending reminders, it is knowing when to stop: detecting that a payment actually landed, without forcing the freelancer into full accounting software or risky bank read-access. Whoever solves payment detection with the least integration friction (forward the payment email, drop in a PDF bank line) removes the main reason these tools churn. The competitive window is also narrow: the current cohort is young and none appears to own a defensible moat, but accounting suites adding a polished auto-chase toggle would flatten the whole category. Win the multi-channel angle, WhatsApp and Telegram chasing rather than email only, since that is how many clients actually respond, and do it before the others notice.
